Wednesday Quiz in Exile IV: Birds and Beasts

Michael5000 still hasn't caved in, so the Australian cousin of the Wednesday quiz is back for yet another week. I've got plenty more where this one came from, Michael, but I don't want to have to use them.

This week's quiz is on the exotic, glamourous and frequently lethal fauna of Terra Australis, possibly the most recognisable and known thing about the country both at home and abroad, utilising photos cribbed as always from that great hub of creative commons licensing, wikipedia. Avoid the tempation to look up the answers, or there's a chance of winding up stabbed through the heart by vicious sealife next time you go swimming. Not a big chance, but it's been known to happen.

Oh my. A bit easy this time round, no?

1. Saltwater Crocodile.

2. Koala. It's not a bear.

3. Redback spider.

4. A wombat - I'm going to go out on a limb and guess Southern Hairy-Nose.

5. Short-beaked Echidna.

6. arg species eludes me. A fruit bat, but I sadly have no idea which. Also known as a flying fox.

7. Laughing Kookaburra.

8. Tasmanian Devil.

9. Greater Bilby.

10. Fairy Penguin. Also known as the Little Penguin, I believe.

11. Cassowary.

12. Species eludes me again. It's a wallaby, but all I could say on top of that is that it ain't a yellow-footed rock wallaby.

1. That's probably a crocodile, not an alligator. I base this assumption on the name "Crocodile Dundee," which I know to be Australia-related. I'm sorry.

2. That is the mighty koala.

3. Looks like a black widow spider, or at least what I imagine a black widow spider looks like.

4. Hmm, some sort of lemur looking thing. Is that what all y'all call a "wombat"? Awesome word, wombat.

5. Well, that would be a porcupine. I believe they're call "hedgehogs" some places?

6. Them's bats. Not wombats. Unless I'm wrong about wombats.

7. A bird. Of perhaps an iconic Australian variety.

8. Some sort of badass critter. I didn't think you guys did carnivores. There's going to have to be a Tasmanian Devil in here somewhere; maybe this is it.

9. Looks like a cross between a kangaroo and a rat. I believe I have read the phrase "kangaroo rat," and hypothesize that this is one such.

10. This looks a little like Angus Young.

11. The blue-headed emu. Or perhaps this is a "jumbuck." It looks like it would fit in a "tuckerbag."

12. A very small photograph of what looks to be a couple of kangaroos.

Due to a big weekend coming up, let's get this marking out of the way now.

1. Saltwater Crocodile (lethal to people)
2. Koalas (lethal to small cars)
3. Redback Spider (lethal if not identified quickly, hangs out if toilets)
4. Wombat (lethal to large cars/trucks)
5. Echidna (not lethal, but kinda prickly)
6. Flying Fox (lethal to a good night's sleep)
7. Kookaburra (lethally funny)
8. Tasmanian Devil (being killed off by a lethal, infectious facial cancer)
9. Bilby (lethal to ants) and for bonus points that's a hopping mouse that snuck into the shot.
10. Blue Penguin (lethally cute, and looking dangerously like Angus Young)
11. Cassowary, (a large, not lethal but dangerously feral turkey)
12. Wallabies (the kangaroos lesser cousin. These are some kind of Pademelon, I wanted a yellow-footed but couldn't find an open-source image)

So, the Australian contingent of John, Alethea and Joanna all get 12/12, and Michael gets 5/12. Next week will be another reasonably easy round and then we're heading into a couple where extensive general knowledge and logic skills will be required.

A quick update on the seasonal score: Those that have played all four rounds are led by Joanna, with 340/480, closely followed by John on 320, then Ale on 230 and Michael on 110. Since only your best 8 results count, though, anyone (even someone yet to play a round) could win their choice of the fabulous prizes.

@John: Sorry, working out the difficulty is a bit of a tricky one. Rest assured there's some slightly more challenging ones heading your way soon.
@Michael: A jumbuck is a sheep, hence why putting one in your tucker-bag is such a crime. with both a jumbuck and a cassowary you'd have to have a mighty big tucker-bag.

Also, I think I knew that about jumbucks and tuckerbags at one point. Just for the record.
